Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we head to the end of our first week of distance learning, I thank you for your patience and cooperation. These are frustrating times for all of us and I fear that we need to brace ourselves for the long haul.
Distance learning is new for all of us and unlike high school, we are dealing with varying levels of ability and varying levels of computer access. This makes it difficult for the teachers to gauge and choose appropriate media for learning and length of instruction. I ask that in your frustration you do not berate the teachers or complain on Facebook and the like. Our teachers are working hard to find ways to present material on each level. Certainly, we want your feedback and are open to suggestions, but we want it as partners in educating your children.
It is easy to say why don't they use this or that when you are not aware of what is going on in other households or what teachers are dealing with. Remember that no forewarning was given as to when the schools would close and though preparations were being made, the announcement on Thursday was unexpected.
There are some who predict that we will not return to school until after Easter: others who predict longer. None of us know for sure and the fluidity of the situation makes future planning near impossible. Know that our goal is to make sure that your children receive more than enrichment so that they will be able to move to the next grade prepared and with confidence. We have begun the third trimester and the assignments given by the teachers will count as a grade - they are not optional. We need to be prepared in the event that school does not reopen (worst-case scenario).
This is a year of disappointment for sure. Many activities will be canceled and others abbreviated. We need to prepare our children and help them put things in perspective. Children will follow your lead on the importance they place on various happenings and events. If you handle it well, they will handle it well.
Update on distance learning: Starting next week
Fridays will be catch up days.
Specials teachers will post their work on Mondays and expect completion by the following Monday.
Teachers who post for the week will do so on Monday and expect completion by Friday.
Teachers who assign daily will continue to do so from Monday to Thursday.
Cancellations: Grandparent Day is canceled whether or not we are back to school. Grandparents are the most vulnerable population and we would never wish to place them in a position of becoming ill.
We pray that you and your families continue to stay safe and well.
